What is Snowboarding?
Snowboarding was developed in the United States in the 1960s due to a growing desire for new winter sports and greater freedom of expression. Over the next decade, pioneers boosted the production of boards, and the sport began to gain crossover appeal with surfers and skateboarders. By 1980, snowboarding was a nationwide activity, and the United States hosted the first world championships in 1983. The International Snowboarding Federation (ISF) was formed in 1991 and the International Ski Federation (FIS) introduced snowboarding as an FIS discipline in 1994. In 2025, the FIS was renamed the International Ski and Snowboard Federation.
Halfpipe, slopestyle and big air are freestyle events, where tricks are scored by judges, while snowboard cross and parallel giant slalom are racing events where the first athlete across the line wins.
Olympic history of snowboard
Men’s and women’s snowboarding made their Olympic debuts at Nagano 1998 with giant slalom and halfpipe competitions. The discipline proved an instant success, returning to Salt Lake City four years later with parallel giant slalom and halfpipe competitions. Snowboard cross made its debut at Turin 2006, while slopestyle was added for Sochi 2014 and big air for PyeongChang 2018. The most recent addition was mixed team snowboard cross at Beijing 2022.
